A room serving younger or first-year athletes, such as a grade 7 or 8 program, usually needs a slightly different mix within those same four categories:
Bars. Younger or first-year athletes: lighter multi-purpose training bars, 20 to 35 lb, to learn the movement before loading a full 45-lb bar.
Varsity athletes: train on a standard 45-lb bar once the lifts are learned.
Machines versus free weights. Younger or first-year athletes: a larger share of selectorized machines, for easier coaching and form correction.
Varsity: the room weights back toward free weights, with machines as the smaller share.
What stays the same. The four core categories, racks, free weights, machines, and flooring, don't change from one age group to the next. What changes is the mix of bars and machines to match how experienced the athletes training in the room actually are.
Two structural numbers decide whether an equipment plan will actually fit the room, and both are worth confirming before anything is ordered. The National Strength and Conditioning Association recommends a ceiling height of 12 to 14 feet, enough clearance for jumps, box jumps, and Olympic lifting movements without an athlete's reach hitting a duct or beam. The same guidance calls for a floor load-bearing capacity of at least 100 pounds per square foot, a number worth confirming with a structural engineer before installing a heavy strength zone, especially on any floor above ground level.
Supervision is a space question as much as a staffing one. NSCA guidance calls for a layout where one supervisor can see roughly three-quarters of the room from a single position. That is the same principle behind the layout at Cégep de Thetford Mines, where racks run along one wall and turf runs along the other, keeping sightlines clear across the floor instead of splitting a supervisor's attention between rows.

Quantity comes down to two things: how many students train at once, and how much space each one needs to lift safely. Both have real numbers behind them, not guesswork.
Space per athlete. The NSCA's 100 sq ft per athlete covers the free-weight and functional training area: it already includes the equipment and clearance, turf included, since athletes train on it. So 20 students at once need about 2,000 sq ft of training area, and the full room runs larger, because the machine zone, storage, and walkways are added on top.
Clearance around racks and platforms. Racks and platforms need at least 3 feet of clear space around them, and free weight stations need a minimum of 36 inches between barbells or dumbbells, so a lift and a spot can happen without students backing into each other's space.
Walkways. Main walkways between zones should run at least 3 to 4 feet wide, wide enough for a student to pass through without walking behind an active lift.
Students per station. A single free-weight station, one rack or one platform, comfortably serves ideally 3 students rotating through a set, which is the number to plan racks and platforms around, not the full roster.
